Our Mission

“To improve the health* of the children living in the Kalika village and its close vicinity”

The goals:
increase availability of the medical first aid
train native inhabitants in simple first aid techniques, convey explicit instructions regarding administartion of selected drugs included in the first aid kits
create new opportunities for studying English - provide studying aids
promote physical activities - aid their childhood - equiping school and village youth club with essential sport articles

*Health as described by the WHO - “health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity”

Durbar Square - the Needs

The aid we are hoping to generate for the children of Kalika Village community will be divided into different sections.
Since the access to medical help is the most pressing issue, it would be addressed as the priority problem. Reaching the closest healthcare post takes about 30 min of walking (please note, that while discussing distances in Nepal, one should actually give time in minutes/hour of walking rather than miles/km. This of course applies only to rural areas and is caused by great terrain variety).

1. Medical materials
We intend to equip Kalika and 3-4 neighboring villages with simple First-aid kits as well as provide required, essential medical training for up to 5 people in each village.
Since convincing the patients with no or very limited medical knowledge to precisely follow drugs administration schedule poses a significant problem (after initial improvement - “we will save it for later” attitude) first aid kits will most probably not contain any strong drugs such as antibiotics - although that is to be decided during training of local people.
Should we have the opportunity to train people with previous medical experience and find required storage conditions we may include drugs like antibiotics.

2. Educational materials
Local school has about 200 students. Studying English is by far most important of tasks ahead for young Nepalese people.
We would like to provide coherent English language study materials - student’s and exercise books at least 2 levels (beginner / intermediate) and accompanying audio cassettes/cd with equipment necessary to play them.

3. Sports articles
A selection of soccer, basket- and volleyballs with necessary nets, badminton equipment.

Upon obtaining / purchasing required articles we intend to ship the majority of most heavy items using airmail post. At this point we hope to receive assistance from Polish National Post Office, DeustchePost or one of the numerous courier companies.

Another pressing issue which we have already begun to address is exemption from import taxes and duties. We have forwareded an offical request to Nepalese embassy in Berlin, Germany (there is no Nepalese embassy in Poland) in which we ask for assistance in this matter.

The Difference

What motivates us in our efforts is the absolute certainty that our project will make a difference. The needs of nepalese children however extensive are simple in their nature. We are not trying to equip a video games saloon nor build a go-carts race track. Expectations of the children from a poor, undeveloped country are often far more modest than their peers’ of rich societies.
The aspects of our intended help - medical, educational and sports will each make a tremendous change simply because it will be the first help ever offered there.

Medical First Aid. Although, we cannot even hope to provide professional medical help as it would mean setting up an entire hospital, even limited number of first aid kits combined with essential training will improve greatly odds of treating otherwise dangerous conditions. Urban citizens may often afford to ignore minor cuts or scratches confident that should anything go wrong numerous ways of obtaining medical care are always within easy reach. Same cut however, should it happen in a rural area poses an entirely different problem. Exposure to different microorganisms, lack of immediate disinfection open door to serious infection. What starts as a insignificant disturbance may very well end as a potentially serious illness

Through a series of workshops, utilizing modern approach (learn by doing) we hope to educate nepalese students in the field of hygiene and disinfection. Though it does sound trivial, we can not allow ourselves to forget that all this takes place in a village where the closest hospital is located at least 10 hours away. There is no ambulance! There are no roads! A patients whose condition is serious has to be literally carried in a bamboo stretcher to the health post.

Education. English has become a truly world’s language. The only way the young generation of Nepalese would be able to benefit from ever increasing foreign tourism is if they speak English. Government schools are often under-equipped, so is the case with SHREE KALIKA school. Even though we realize how very limited our help is, we believe that giving a chance to 181 students is worth it. Access to new English course - books, new audio equipment for school and introduction to effective foreign language study methods are the ways through which we will make English more accessible.

Sport. Let’s make again childhood the synonym of joy. Joy is as crucial to child’s development as education, healthcare or proper nutrition. We cannot offer items which would put a smile on faces of European kids - their expectations are sophisticated - but we can hope to ignite this joy through sports. By providing sports equipment we hope to sparkle the fire of fair competition . Basket-, volley-, and footballs are a sure way to bring laughter.

School will be able to introduce an interesting physical education program. Students will not only be given sport equipment but also will be trained and instructed in the official rules of volley, basket and football.
